Temperature mapping shows how temperature actually behaves inside a cold room, fridge, warehouse or chamber — across every shelf, corner and pallet position, not just at the single point where the built-in display probe sits. A unit can read 4 °C at its controller while a corner near the door drifts well outside range. Mapping finds those weak points before an auditor, a failed batch or a spoiled vaccine delivery does.

How a temperature mapping study works
Every study follows a documented method under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system:
- Protocol and layout. We agree the scope, acceptance limits and study duration, then design a multi-point logger grid covering corners, centre points, high and low positions, and known risk areas near doors, vents and refrigeration units.
- Logger deployment. Calibrated data loggers are positioned throughout the space or chamber and left to record at set intervals.
- The study runs. Equipment operates normally for the agreed period. Where the protocol calls for it, the study can include door-opening events, defrost cycles or empty and loaded comparisons.
- Analysis. We identify hot and cold spots, measure the spread between the warmest and coldest positions, and flag any excursions outside your acceptance limits.
- Reporting. You receive a mapping report with logger data, findings and recommended locations for your permanent monitoring probes. Reports are normally issued within 3 to 5 business days of the study, with 24 to 48 hour express reporting available when arranged in advance.
Where your protocol calls for mapping to be repeated — annually, or after changes to racking, loading patterns or refrigeration plant — we track the due date and schedule the next visit before it falls due, just as we do for every calibration asset on our books.
Who needs mapping, and why
Mapping is rarely optional for regulated storage. Pharmaceutical and GxP warehousing operations are commonly required to hold current mapping studies for their storage areas under good distribution practice expectations. Pathology and laboratory services rely on mapping to defend the integrity of samples and reagents. Food manufacturers and distributors operating HACCP-based food safety programs use mapping to verify that cold rooms and freezers protect product at every position, not just at the sensor. Pharmacies and immunisation providers map vaccine fridges in line with the ‘Strive for 5’ cold chain guidelines.

Traceability and reporting
Every logger used in a study is calibrated against reference standards that are themselves calibrated by NATA-accredited laboratories, so your results are traceable to Australian national measurement standards. The mapping report documents the traceability chain for each logger, alongside the study protocol, raw data, analysis and conclusions — a single document you can hand to an auditor without further explanation.
Mapping rarely stands alone. Most clients pair a study with data logger validation to confirm the monitoring devices themselves, temperature and humidity calibration for the permanent sensors installed at the recommended positions, and autoclave validation where steam sterilisation sits alongside cold chain storage in the same facility.
Frequently asked questions
How often should temperature mapping be repeated?
Most quality systems call for remapping at a defined interval — commonly annually — and after any significant change: new racking, altered loading patterns, relocation, or work on the refrigeration or HVAC plant. Your protocol or auditor sets the frequency; we track it and book the next study before it falls due.
Should the study be run empty or loaded?
It depends on the purpose. New or modified equipment is often mapped empty first to characterise the space, then loaded to reflect real operating conditions. Loaded studies matter because stock changes airflow and thermal behaviour. Many protocols require both, and we design the study to match yours.
How long does a mapping study take?
Logging periods vary with the space and the protocol — commonly 24 to 72 hours for a fridge or small cold room, and longer for warehouses, where some protocols also call for seasonal repeats. Our technicians set up and collect loggers on site, so disruption to your operation is minimal.
