If you’ve ever compared calibration quotes, you’ve probably seen two similar-sounding phrases: “NATA-accredited” and “NATA-traceable.” They are not the same thing — and knowing the difference can save you money without putting your compliance at risk.

What “NATA-accredited” means

NATA (the National Association of Testing Authorities) accredits laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025. When a lab is NATA-accredited for a specific measurement, it has been independently assessed as technically competent for that scope, and it can issue certificates carrying the NATA endorsement and logo.

Accreditation is scope-specific: a lab might be accredited for mass but not for torque, or for temperature but not pressure. So “NATA-accredited” only means something when it is tied to the exact measurement you need.

What “NATA-traceable” means

NATA-traceable calibration means the reference standards used to calibrate your instrument were themselves calibrated by NATA-accredited laboratories. There is an unbroken chain of comparisons — your instrument, our reference standards, national measurement standards — with each link documented.

This traceability is what actually gives your measurements meaning. It lets you say, with evidence, that a gauge reads correctly and here is the paper trail back to the national standard.

What does ISO 9001 actually require?

This is where many businesses over-buy. ISO 9001:2015, clause 7.1.5.2 requires that, where measurement traceability is a requirement, monitoring and measuring equipment be calibrated or verified against measurement standards traceable to international or national measurement standards.

Note what it says, and what it does not. It requires traceability. It does not require that your calibration provider be NATA-accredited. For the large majority of ISO 9001-certified manufacturers, NATA-traceable calibration backed by a documented quality system fully satisfies the standard.

When you genuinely need NATA-accredited calibration

There are cases where accredited certificates are the right call:

  • Your customer contract or regulator explicitly specifies ISO/IEC 17025-accredited calibration.
  • You operate under a scheme (certain pharmaceutical, defence, or legal-for-trade contexts) that mandates accredited results for specific measurements.
  • Your auditor has stated in writing that traceable certificates are not sufficient for a particular instrument.

If any of those apply to a specific instrument, use an accredited lab for that instrument — and keep everything else on cost-effective traceable calibration.
