A single thermometer on the wall tells you the temperature at that spot. It says nothing about the pallet in the far corner, the shelf beside the door, or the air right under the fan. Temperature mapping is how you find out what is really happening across a whole space — and prove it.

What temperature mapping actually is

Temperature mapping is a documented study that places calibrated data loggers throughout a controlled space, records temperature (and often humidity) continuously over a set period, and analyses the result to identify the warmest and coldest points, recovery behaviour, and whether the space holds its specification everywhere — not just at the control sensor.

The deliverable is a report: sensor placement, raw data, hot and cold spots, excursions, and conclusions.

When you need it

  • Commissioning a new cold room, freezer, incubator, stability chamber or warehouse
  • After changes — new racking, altered airflow, relocated units, upgraded refrigeration
  • Periodic requalification, typically annually, for GMP, TGA, pharmaceutical, pathology and vaccine storage
  • Cold chain and transport validation — refrigerated vehicles and shipping containers
  • After a failure or excursion, to prove the space is back in control
  • Because an auditor asked for evidence your storage holds specification throughout

How many sensors, and where?

Sensor count scales with volume and complexity. Small cold rooms may need 9 to 15 loggers; a large warehouse can need considerably more. Placement targets the places most likely to fail: corners, ceiling and floor levels, near doors, beside heat sources, next to and away from evaporators and air returns, and at the actual product storage height. One logger is always placed alongside the facility’s own control sensor so you can see how well it represents the room.

How long should a study run?

Long enough to capture normal operation and its worst moments. A minimum of 24 hours is typical; 72 hours or a full week is common for warehouses and anything with day/night or weekday/weekend variation. Studies often include door-open and power-loss recovery testing, because how fast a space recovers matters as much as how it sits when undisturbed.

Seasonal mapping — summer and winter — is worth doing where ambient conditions swing significantly.

What the report must contain

A mapping report that satisfies an auditor includes:

  • The protocol: purpose, scope, acceptance criteria, and sensor layout with a diagram
  • Calibration certificates for every logger used, traceable to national standards
  • Full raw data plus graphs for each sensor
  • Identified hot spots and cold spots, with min, max and mean
  • Any excursions, with duration and likely cause
  • Recovery test results
  • A clear conclusion against the acceptance criteria, and recommendations

Mapping vs calibration — not the same thing

Calibration makes sure each individual sensor or logger reads correctly. Mapping uses those calibrated sensors to characterise a whole space. You need calibration to make mapping meaningful, which is why every logger in an FWC study is calibrated and traceable before it is deployed.

How often should we re-map?
Annually is the common requalification interval for regulated storage, and any time the space changes materially — racking, refrigeration, layout or load pattern.

Do you map refrigerated vehicles?
Yes — refrigerated transport and shipping containers can be mapped, including door-open and route-condition scenarios.
