Capability and range

We calibrate both clockwise and anticlockwise torque across the low- and high-range instruments common in Australian manufacturing, construction and assembly. Calibrations are performed at multiple points across the working range — typically 20{ba9c0d8d78c6fccc70893e8a864d68467529f0286770abfe273019ba4716b247}, 60{ba9c0d8d78c6fccc70893e8a864d68467529f0286770abfe273019ba4716b247} and 100{ba9c0d8d78c6fccc70893e8a864d68467529f0286770abfe273019ba4716b247} of full scale, or per ISO 6789 for hand torque tools — so your certificate reflects real accuracy across the range you actually use, not just a single reference point.

This matters more with torque than with most instruments. A wrench that reads correctly at mid-range can be well out at the top of its scale, and a single-point certificate will not show it.

How we calibrate torque tools

  1. Initial inspection — physical condition, mechanism function, ratchet and pawl wear, and safety are checked before calibration begins. If we find a fault, you hear about it before we proceed.
  2. As-found readings — the tool is measured against a traceable torque transducer at multiple points across its range, in both directions where relevant, before any adjustment. This is the auditable record of how far the tool has drifted since its last calibration, and it is what tells you whether the work already done with it is defensible.
  3. Adjustment — where the tool supports adjustment and is found out of tolerance, we bring it back into specification.
  4. As-left readings — final verification at the same reference points after adjustment.
  5. Certificate — issued as a PDF including tool identification, environmental conditions, the reference standards used, measurement uncertainty, as-found and as-left data, pass or fail against tolerance, and the technician’s signature.

On-site torque calibration

Most torque tools can be calibrated on-site. Our mobile units carry traceable torque transducers and analysers, so we can verify an entire toolroom or production line in a single visit rather than shipping tools away for days. On-site matters most when:

  • A production or assembly line cannot spare its tools
  • Safety-critical fasteners — automotive, aerospace, rail, structural — demand documented control
  • A compliance audit or customer PPAP requires current certificates on a fixed date
  • You have many tools and transport risk outweighs travel cost

  • Laboratory — 3 to 5 business days standard, or 24 to 48 hour express on request
  • On-site, Sydney metro and ACT — typically within 5 business days

How often should torque tools be calibrated?

For hand torque tools, ISO 6789 recommends recalibration every 12 months or every 5,000 operations, whichever comes first. In practice:

  • General maintenance and workshop tools — annually
  • Safety-critical assembly such as aerospace fasteners, structural bolting and rail — every 6 months or 5,000 cycles
  • High-volume production tools — quarterly, or driven by your SPC data

We tag every calibrated tool with its due date and track the schedule, so reminders reach you before a tool falls out of certification rather than after an audit finds it.

Torque calibration FAQ

Is your torque calibration NATA-traceable?

Yes. FWC Calibration is not itself a NATA-accredited laboratory, but our torque calibrations are NATA-traceable — the torque reference standards we use are calibrated by NATA-accredited laboratories, so your measurements trace back to national standards. We operate an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and align our torque procedures with ISO 6789. If your procurement specifically requires an accredited laboratory, tell us before booking and we will confirm scope.

Do you calibrate torque wrenches on-site?

Yes. Our mobile units carry traceable torque transducers and analysers, so wrenches, screwdrivers and multipliers can be calibrated at your site — which suits production lines that cannot release tools for several days.

What standard do you calibrate to?

For hand torque tools we align with ISO 6789. Transducers and assembly tools are calibrated against traceable torque reference standards across their working range, in both directions where applicable.

Can you provide a certificate for an audit?

Yes. Every torque calibration comes with a traceable PDF certificate showing as-found and as-left readings, measurement uncertainty, the reference standards used, and pass or fail against tolerance — suitable evidence for ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100 and customer PPAP audits.

What if a tool fails calibration?

We record the as-found readings, attempt adjustment where the tool allows it, and tell you plainly if it cannot be brought back into tolerance. You get the data either way. A failed calibration is still evidence, and on safety-critical work it is often the more important record.
