Scale calibration is the routine check that keeps weighing results accurate, batch records defensible and audits uneventful. Scales used for trade — where product is bought or sold by weight — sit under National Measurement Institute (NMI) trade-measurement rules and carry additional obligations. Verification of trade instruments is a separate legal process carried out by licensed verifiers. Our calibration supports the internal checks you run between those verifications, and we will tell you when an instrument is likely to fall under trade-measurement rules so you can arrange verification before it goes back into service.
How our scale calibration works
Every scale calibration follows the same disciplined sequence. The technician first records as-found readings, so you know how the instrument was performing before any adjustment. We then run three core tests using certified test masses:
- Corner-load (eccentricity) testing — the same mass is placed at the centre and each corner of the platform to confirm the reading does not shift with load position
- Repeatability testing — the same mass is weighed repeatedly to confirm the scale returns a consistent result every time
- Linearity testing — readings are checked at multiple points across the working range, from low load to full capacity, to confirm accuracy at the loads you actually use
Where an instrument is out of tolerance and adjustment is possible, we adjust it and record as-left readings. On-site work is typically completed the same day, so production lines and laboratory benches are not left waiting. Instruments that come to our laboratory are typically turned around in 3-5 business days, with express turnaround of 24-48 hours when scheduled in advance.
Who needs calibrated scales?
Weighing data feeds directly into quality records, so regular scale calibration is expected wherever those records are audited. We calibrate weighing equipment for:
- Laboratories, where balance accuracy underpins every quantitative result
- Manufacturers working under ISO 9001 quality systems or GxP-style requirements
- Food producers, where check-weighing and recipe batching are commonly required under HACCP-based programs
- Freight, logistics and warehousing operators charging or declaring by weight
- Hospitals, aged care, veterinary and animal-health facilities weighing patients for dosing and monitoring
Calibration intervals vary. Heavily used or critical scales are often calibrated every six months; most other instruments run on a twelve-month cycle. FWC tracks the calibration due date of every asset on your register — monthly, 6-monthly or 12-monthly — and schedules the next visit before anything falls due, so a lapsed certificate never surfaces in an audit.
Traceability and certificates
Our test masses are reference standards calibrated by NATA-accredited laboratories, which makes every result NATA-traceable to Australian national measurement standards. Each calibration certificate records the instrument’s identification, the as-found and as-left readings, the test masses used and the traceability chain behind them. That is the document an auditor wants to see, and it is issued under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
Scale calibration rarely travels alone. How often should scales be calibrated?
Twelve months is the most common interval, but the right answer depends on how hard the scale works and what its readings feed into. High-throughput production scales and balances behind critical measurements are often placed on a six-monthly cycle. We help you set an interval per instrument, then track it so nothing falls due unnoticed.
Do you calibrate scales on site in Sydney?
Yes. Our mobile units carry certified test masses and calibrate scales on site across metropolitan and regional NSW, as well as the ACT, Victoria and the Northern Territory. On-site work is usually completed the same day, which matters for floor scales and platform scales that cannot easily be shipped to a laboratory.
What happens if my scale fails calibration?
We tell you straight away. Where the instrument supports adjustment, we bring it back within tolerance and document both the as-found and as-left condition, so your quality records show exactly what changed. If a scale cannot be corrected, the certificate records that finding so you can make an informed repair-or-replace decision.
