If you run flow meters in a process, a utility or a compliance schedule, you will hear both words used — often interchangeably, and often incorrectly. They are not the same, and knowing which one you actually need saves both money and audit trouble.

Verification, in plain terms

Verification answers one question: is this meter still reading correctly? The meter is compared against a traceable reference under known conditions, and the result is recorded as a pass or fail against your chosen tolerance. Nothing is adjusted. You end up with documented evidence that the meter was — or was not — performing within limits on that date.

Verification is what most compliance schedules actually require between full calibrations. It is faster, cheaper, and usually enough to satisfy a periodic check.

Calibration, in plain terms

Calibration goes further. The meter is measured across multiple points of its working range, as-found readings are recorded, the meter is adjusted where its design allows, and as-left readings are taken afterwards. You receive measurement uncertainty, the reference standards used, and a full traceable certificate.

The as-found data matters more than people realise: it tells you whether the readings you have been relying on since the last calibration were actually inside tolerance. If a meter comes back significantly out, you have an evidence trail for the product or billing affected.

Which do you need?

  • Verification — periodic confidence checks, compliance schedules that ask for a documented check, meters that historically hold their accuracy well.
  • Calibration — new installations, meters that failed verification, custody-transfer or billing meters, anything feeding a critical process, and any meter whose drift history is unknown.

A common, sensible pattern is annual calibration with an interim verification at six months on critical meters.

How often?

There is no universal interval. Drive it from consequence and evidence:

  • Custody transfer, billing, or safety-critical flow — every 6 to 12 months.
  • General process monitoring — annually.
  • Clean, stable service with good drift history — annually, extending only once you have data to justify it.
  • Always re-check after a process upset, a pipe modification, or if readings look wrong.

Dirty, abrasive or entrained-solids service shortens every one of these.

What a good certificate shows

Whether you choose verification or calibration, the paperwork should stand up on its own:

  • As-found readings (and as-left, for calibration)
  • The reference standards used, and their traceability
  • Measurement uncertainty
  • Pass or fail against a stated tolerance
  • The date, conditions, technician, and a recommended next-check interval

Frequently asked questions

Is verification enough for my audit?
Often yes, if your procedure specifies periodic verification rather than full calibration. Check what your quality system and any customer contract actually require — then match the service to it rather than over-buying.

Can you verify a flow meter without shutting down the line?
In many cases yes, using clamp-on reference methods on suitable pipework. We will tell you honestly when a meter genuinely has to come out.

Do you calibrate water meters?
Yes — mechanical, turbine, electromagnetic and ultrasonic water meters, on-site or in-lab.
