FWC Calibration provides NATA-traceable mechanical calibration across New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria and the Northern Territory. Mechanical metrology covers the instruments that measure size, force, torque and mass — the tools that decide whether a fastener is tight enough, a part is within tolerance, or a batch is the weight the label claims. We calibrate them on-site or in our Werrington laboratory, and every instrument comes back with a certificate documenting exactly what we found.

Dimensional instruments
Dimensional calibration is the largest part of our mechanical scope, and the one most often skipped until an audit finds it missing.

Torque instruments
Torque tools drift with use, and a wrench that reads correctly at 50 Nm can be well out at the top of its range. We calibrate across the working range rather than at a single point, so the reading you rely on is the one we verified.

How a mechanical calibration is performed
- Inspection — the instrument is checked for wear, damage, play and anything that would make a calibration meaningless, such as a caliper with a worn jaw or a wrench with a failing ratchet.
- As-found readings — performance is recorded against reference standards at multiple points across the working range, before anything is adjusted. These readings are what tell you whether work already completed with that tool is defensible.
- Adjustment — where the instrument supports adjustment and is out of tolerance, it is brought back into specification.
- As-left readings — final verification at the same reference points after adjustment.
- Certificate — issued as a PDF recording instrument identification, ambient conditions, the reference standards used and their traceability, measurement uncertainty, and both as-found and as-left data.
The as-found data matters more than most buyers expect. If a tool is found well out of tolerance, those readings are the evidence you need to decide how far back to look at the work it was used on. A certificate that reports only the final state cannot answer that question.
On-site or in our laboratory
Most dimensional and torque instruments can be calibrated on-site. Our mobile units carry the reference standards and the environmental monitoring needed to do the work properly at your facility, which avoids taking tools out of service and shipping them away.
Some work is better done in the lab — hardness testers, large-capacity force equipment, and any instrument needing tighter environmental control than a workshop can offer. On-site visits are typically scheduled within 5 business days; laboratory turnaround is 3 to 5 business days plus transport, with 24-48 hour express available when scheduled in advance. Calibration intervals
Twelve months is the usual starting interval, but it is a starting point rather than a rule. Frequency of use, the consequence of an out-of-tolerance reading, the manufacturer’s recommendation and your own historical drift data should all move it. A caliper used daily on safety-critical parts warrants a shorter interval than one used monthly on non-critical work.
We track due dates for every asset under our care and schedule the visit before it falls due, so equipment does not quietly slip out of certification between audits.
Mechanical calibration FAQ
Are your certificates NATA accredited?
No — and any provider claiming otherwise is worth checking. FWC Calibration is not a NATA-accredited laboratory. Our reference standards are calibrated by NATA-accredited laboratories, which is what makes our measurements traceable, and we operate an ISO 9001:2015 quality system. Calibrations are documented to ISO/IEC 17025 principles. If your procurement specifically requires an accredited laboratory, tell us before booking and we will confirm scope.
Can you calibrate a tool that has failed?
Yes. We record the as-found readings, attempt adjustment where the instrument allows it, and report honestly if it cannot be brought back into tolerance. You receive the data either way — a failed calibration is still evidence, and it is often the more important record.
Do you provide asset labels and reminders?
Yes. Each instrument is labelled with its calibration date and next due date, and we track the schedule so reminders reach you before equipment falls due.
