How Often Should You Calibrate Your Equipment? A Practical Interval Guide

“How often should I calibrate this?” is one of the most common questions we get — and the honest answer is: it depends. Calibrating too rarely risks bad measurements and failed audits; calibrating too often wastes money. Here is a practical guide to setting the right interval for your equipment.
The short answer
For most instruments, annual (12-month) calibration is the sensible default. But the right interval is driven by how the instrument is used, not the calendar alone. Some tools need calibrating every six months; some can safely stretch longer once you have drift history to justify it.
What actually determines your calibration interval
- Manufacturer recommendation — the starting point, usually 12 months.
- How critical the measurement is — safety, product quality or legal-for-trade measurements warrant tighter intervals.
- Usage and duty cycle — a torque wrench used hundreds of times a day drifts faster than one used weekly.
- Environment — heat, vibration, dust and transport all accelerate drift.
- Drift history — if an instrument comes back in tolerance year after year, you have evidence to extend the interval. If it drifts, shorten it.
- Regulatory or customer requirements — ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100, TGA/GMP or a customer contract may dictate the interval.
Typical intervals by instrument type
- Electrical test equipment (multimeters, insulation testers, clamp meters) — 12 months; every 6 months in heavy or safety-critical use.
- Torque tools — 12 months or 5,000 operations, whichever comes first (per ISO 6789); every 6 months for safety-critical fasteners.
- Pressure gauges and transmitters — 6 to 12 months depending on criticality and process.
- Temperature probes, thermometers and data loggers — 12 months; more often for pharma and cold-chain.
- Scales and balances — 12 months, plus routine in-house checks with test weights between calibrations.
- Dimensional tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges) — 12 months in normal workshop use.
When to calibrate sooner than scheduled
Recalibrate immediately if an instrument is dropped or damaged, exposed to conditions outside its rating, gives readings you suspect are wrong, or is about to be used for a critical measurement or audit. It is far cheaper than a product recall or a non-conformance.
